Clearing Their Closets
This piece was produced in collaboration with artist Joe Joe Orangias for his exhibition Unsettling Colonial Objects: A Process of Removal and Transformation presented at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design's Brant Gallery in Boston in October 2016.
Clearing Their Closets is a deconstruction of an "Adult Dream Catcher Sexy Indian Costume." The title and presentation of this costume point to a common trope that misrepresents Indigenous Peoples, especially women. Joe Joe and I dissassembled the costume and re-presented it in order to transform its function and to reflect the role that non-Indigenous Americans play in perpetuating oppresive mythologies.
